Virginia's candles

Learning how to make soap, be it from scratch or through rebatch, is relatively easy if you find the right teacher. While information about soap classes, natural cosmetics workshops, handmade toiletries "hands on" courses and such is becoming more and more easy to come across, it is important to understand that these activities are too often run by cosmetic/aromatherapy supplies retailers, who look at workshops primarily as a way to expand their sales, and are not too much concerned about how much each participant really "learns".

In order for you to gain a good understanding of what making your own natural soap and handmade cosmetics is really about, choosing to attend qualified classes and workshops is the only way to go.

This page introduces what we consider the best teachers.

Virginia Sullivan

Virginia operates in Perth, Western Australia. Starting from a sound aromatherapy background, Virginia can teach you:

  • how to make soap from scratch,
  • how to make soap by rebatching (improperly called "remilling") natural soap bases,
  • how to get the most out of Melt & Pour (glycerin) bases.
  • how to make creams, lotions, moisturisers, hair conditioners, skin & lip balms, salves, cleansers, bath salts, bath bombs, blended massage oils, and many more natural cosmetics.

Virginia is also an experienced candlemaker (the wonderful candle in this page was made by her). You can contact Virginia using this special form.

Rebecca Midkiff: owner of Aromatics & More Ltd.
rebeccam@clear.net.nz, tel. 09 832 8180

Rebecca operates in the Auckland area. In general, she puts on a workshop per month on a weekend day as the need arises. The workshops are tailored to the expertise and need of the people wanting to attend. Rebecca teaches both beginner and advanced workshops, using wholesome ingredients you might already have in your kitchen as well as specialty cosmetic ingredients. Some of the things taught at Rebecca's workshops are:

  • Shampoos and Conditioners,
  • Creams and Lotions,
  • Lip Care/Foot Care Products,
  • Deodorants,
  • Sunscreens, and
  • Gels.

Active ingredients, such as Vitamins and Botanical extracts, are used to customize products especially for the customer. Workshops are conducted on Rebecca's 14 acre bush block in the Waitakeres and it's generally a relaxing and enjoyable day for all that attend. Those who attend the workshops leave loaded down with products.
