Rosanne's Soap Recipe
Rosanne's Comino Soap
I called this soap Comino for the island which has been the inspiration behind this creation. Comino is a simple island, so I tried to keep the recipe simple. It is one of the Maltese islands and inhabited by only one family (four people). Besides this family there is a police station and a hotel, which is closed in winter. In summer the hotel is very popular with both Maltese and tourists as many boat trips are organised taking people mainly for a day. Campers also abound. In winter, the place is heaven. There are practically no campers or other visitors and being on the island is like being in the middle of nowhere. One has to learn to live with nature as sometimes it is practically impossible because of the rough seas to cross over to Gozo, the nearest island for supplies. I love to go camping on Comino both in summer and winter but especially in winter. It is where I really relax. Although my foremost passion in life is to travel and see the world, when I travel, I am so busy getting involved in the place I am visiting and rying to take in the culture of the people that I have no time to relax, take it easy or sleep. In Comino, I forget the time, cut myself from the rest of the world and do all that.
The soap has been swirled (sort of) blue to reflect the sea surrounding the island. I have put sea salt on top to reflect the salty atmosphere and it has been fragranced with citronella, rosemary and tea tree eos - citronella is what we use in the evenings to keep off the mosquitoes, and rosemary and tea tree have been added to try to give the soap the herbal feel of the place. Chamomile tea was used for the liquid for the same reason. Enjoy!
Heres the recipe for a 3,200 grammes batch.
- Olive oil 1600 grammes
- Palm oil 800 grammes
- Coconut oil 640 grammes
- Sesame oil 60 grammes
- NaOH 446 grammes
- Chamomile Tea 800 grammes
- EO blend 96 grammes
- Blue ultramarine 1 tsp
- Sea salt 200 grammes (not all was used)
- Liquid soap colour few drops
EO blend was made up of 60 grammes citronella, 30 grammes rosemary and six grammes tea tree. Before starting the soap, I coloured the sea salt with a few drops of blue liquid soap colour. As soon as I put the soap in the mould I sprinkled the coloured sea salt on top.
