Sassy Citrus Slices Soap by Lauri Lee

Lauri Lee's Sassy Citrus Slices soap

Several months ago I found some beautiful kumquats at the market. I brought them home and cut them into quarters and set them to infuse into almond oil, not sure what I would do with it, but excited about the prospect! When the swap came up my mind started working. By then the oil had a wonderful citrus smell to it and I had acquired some new E/O's and F/O's for my collection. I knew I wanted to do a citrus soap, because they are very invigorating and very neutral as far as male/female. I decided to use some grapefruit juice I had saved and frozen as part of my liquid for the lye mixture. It turned a great orange color, but once mixed with the oils it didn't hold its color so I had to add a little extra color to bring it close to what I was looking for. I then decided, since I didn't have any molds that look anything like an orange, that I would use oranges as a mold! I cut fresh oranges in half, dug out the meat inside and used the empty shell as a mold for the soap. It added to the citrus smell and made them the shape I was looking for. I then cut them into slices once I popped them out of the orange shells. I made sure and scraped off any left over pieces of the orange rind, for customs reasons, but it would be great to leave it there otherwise. It comes to trace fairly quickly, so there isn't much time to play with it once you start pouring.

I hope you enjoy my sassy soap!

Ingredients [*]

  • Palm Kernel 12 oz.
  • Hazelnut Oil 8 oz.
  • Jojoba Oil 8 oz.
  • Avocado Oil 9 oz.
  • Almond Oil infused with
  • Kumquat 12 oz.
  • Babassu Oil 3 oz.
  • Beeswax 4 oz.
  • Mango Butter 6 oz.

Superfatted at 5%:

  • 8 oz of lye (I added just a touch extra lye to balance out the acid in the grapefruit juice)
  • 8.5 oz Grapefruit Juice
  • 8.9 oz of distilled water
  • 10 ml Bitter Orange Orchid F/O
  • 5 ml Grapefruit E/O
  • 5 ml Lemongrass E/O
  • 10 ml orange soap coloring

Do not insulate, because of the natural sugar in the juice and the beeswax. They need to be unmolded within 12 to 18 hours after pouring.
